What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

Just dispatched a magnificent bluey after some fk of a cat ripped it up. The neighbours cats use the grass/dirt at the end of my outdoor area as a dirt box, it stinks. I know they knock off the frogs as I find some stiff and destroyed down the back.
I have a fair idea that a grenade or flame thrower is illegal but seriously what can I use to keep these mongrels out of the native friendly yard

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

try citrus peel or something with a high astringency. my moggys hate it and I saved some plants by putting citrus peel around them. unfortuately moggys are natural hunters and nocturnal the same as the majority of our natives.

A big dog...a big hungry dog SmileyCentral.com

Citrus peel doesn't always work, I had one cat take a snif at the peel and walk straight over the top it.

Eeeew re the neighbours

Well I was going to say a dog works a treat as long as you want a dog of course. There is a wildlife park here called Warrawong and I can't remember his name but he hates cats and wears a hat made of cats - been on TV - anyway he designed a fence made so that no cats could get in - made a very flimpsy chicken wire fence that at the top the stuff is then held at right angles and it is all very wobbly - I am trying to describe it with not much success!!- apparently the wobbliness and the bit at the top stops them getting in altogether - expensive and maybe not quite what you want - also no trees so the cats can't jump over - I have two darling cats but they have runs so they can never catch anything.

Jeepers, my cat doesnt stray into yards, but depending on his mood he can be real loving and furry or a downright lunatic!  He loves the dogs coz he is KING when he chooses.  He dont like tin food at all or whiska's biscuits at all, he would rather starve and has done...The only thing he really doesn't like is strangers in the house, so he hides, disappears.  That's it. Other than that he likes to stay warm and cosy and will find him curled up on coffee table and chairs.  He loves a good rub on tummy when in a loving mood and being stroked, like most of us really!!

Cats really don't like a .222 or a good kill trap, like a Timms or Conibear trap, or a leghold trap and a bang on the head with a hammer.

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

Mmm very hard and you don't want to affect the frogs. I say dig the offending area out and replace it with either gravel or new soil, then as MorgyAu said place the grated citrus peel, it has to be dried rather than fresh and also spray (to soaking) the area with citronella oils mixed with water in a spray bottle.

My other thought was feed the buggers - place bowls of cat food there. They won't pee where they eat surely.

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

thanks everyone, hammer sounds good. my cattle cross used to keep the cats at bay by threat of head removal from body but hes gone sadly and as possibly having to move back home cant get another one.

my girl has a little dog that stays 5 nights and he doesnt mind chasing the cats but I think they have sized him up and have had a swipe at him.

i wouldnt feed them, unless it was a last supper.

good you jas for being one of the few people i know who have cats and understand the destruction they do so dont let them out.

will have a go with some of the suggestions and let you know
thanks heaps

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

Please no one hurt a cat. If you put white vinegar where ever you don't want them to be, they won't be there.
It won't harm anyone, except ants.

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

Please no one hurt a cat.

Or use a hammer on them,

Feel that most have had cats that go meow in the middle of the night and have tossed shoes at them or just told them off but to hurt one is another thing in its self,

I wonder if the shoes were on the other foot,

How would people feel?

Being hunted down by a cat lol,

We all realise that cats kill a lot of the wild life, but it was people that breed the cats in the first place, and most of them are unwanted xmas presents,

Try these first

(If you put white vinegar where ever you don't want them to be, they won't be there.

Place grated citrus peel, it has to be dried rather than fresh and also spray (to soaking) the area with citronella oils mixed with water in a spray bottle.)

All so you can ring the cat place and the will bring out boxes to trap them, they will take the unwanted cats away for you,

Goody

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

My cat sleeps 90 pc of the 24hr day, inside the house

She has been repetively beaten up by a Tom, here near out front door, when we have been away sometimes and left a window open for her and at other times in the early evening

She is white and desexed, so very advantageous to a Tom

Agree, cats should be locked up of a night, even putting them in the laundry if you don't want a cat in the house as such

They are a very easy quiet pet to manage, it's down to the owners to act responsible

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

Cats are one of the main predators in New Zealand of our native lizards and ground nesting birds, many of which are threatened with extinction in the next 50 years or so according to the IUCN and our own Department of Conservation's Species Threat Classification.

The fact that people brought them here doesn't really change that. It is also people who don't get their pets desexed (and a desexed cat can still chomp through 20 plus skinks in a single hunting session); dump unwanted cats at forest park roadends and in reserves.

So sorry catlovers but it is the kill-trap or the bullet for them. In truth it is hard to get near enough to a trapped cat to knock it on the head anyway. That works better for possums.

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

Question is are the cats local pets if they are you'll get in deep cat poo and probably sued if they are ferral and coming out of the parkland then I'd call RSPCA or Cat Protection for thier advice and put out a couple of traps for you because if they  are ferral in the parkland you and the rangers won;t want them there but do it responsibly and if they are local pets maybe you could ask the neighbours to keep them inside at night/

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

...if only it were that simple...funnily enough, i am "one of the rangers", and yeah most cats in forest parks and reserves are feral (but are descended from your beloved Felix aren't they), we follow the regs about trapping near dwellings of course, but hey if there is a 'pet' eating endangered species in our reserves, sorry bucko, say hello to cold hard steel...shoulda kept it indoors...people have to register dogs and are not allowed to let them roam...same should go for cats i reckon...stat if you don't have a gun licence a good air rifle will suffice...

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

dogs go feral too remember if picked up wallabies, wombat, koalas and possums that have been mauled by dogs.

Sensible suggestion though what about a stringline with bells on it hung either high where cats jump or low to make them crawl under either the bells will alert you the natives or give the puddys the erks

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

Yes dogs do also go feral but not on anything like the scale of cats, and pet cats are a big problem too, if not managed properly.

A kill trap IS a sensible suggestion. Depends on your perspective.

Amazing how everyone wants to save the whales but couldn't give a crap about endangered species closer to home, especially if it actually affects their lifestyle...

an Aussie viewpoint

http://www.abc.net.au/rn/science/ockham/stories/s64308.htm

Getting the crazy cat protection people to trap them and take them away just shifts the problem somewhere else...

Re: What do cats hate, tell me so I can get it

Actually I do care about native species and my boys are kept on a short leash but as we live in the inner city rats mice and cockroaches are pretty much all they get to chase maybe an odd skink here and there. But they have collars with bells and only allowed out when I wake up in the morning otherwise sorry boys its kittylitter time
