What chords can you play now? Can you play barre chords? If not, i would suggest googling that 'barre chords' and take it from there.
Also even tho you don't read music, make sure you know the names of the strings (EADGBE on 'standard' tuned guitar) and the notes at each fret - that way you can work out chords up and down the neck once you know a few basic shapes.
Start with the major chords based on the notes on the 6th (Low E, or biggest) and 5th (A or next biggest) strings - from there you can work out minors and 7ths which is pretty much gonna keep you busy for a lifetime of rock'n'roll. If that's what you're into...

Lefty shouldn't make a difference really, the basics are the same as long as your guitar is strung right and tuned right (learn how to tune by ear!!! without an electronic tuner!)...seriously tho' if you can play E major and A major on open strings, then once you suss out making a barre with your index finger, you can use those 2 shapes to make all the other major chords.
Same goes for open strings E minor and A minor...honestly give it a go - it's not immediately easy - but nothing worthwhile is, and if you do a bit of practice every day you will get better at it. It is totally worth it.
The other thing that is worth doing is getting a simple battery operated metronome and practice everything (slowly!!) with that. It will make all the difference between being "crappy" or "ok" at best, and being "good" - between swinging, and not swinging...
...by all means get some lessons as this will all be much easier with someone there to show you, as you have pointed out...
