Cash aspect of sperm donors?
Just wandering, as my sister's looking at the option of finding a sperm donor... Does the sperm donor expect money in return? Obviously I'm not sure how this works. I guess what's the motivating factor for the man in this?
Does anyone know any websites I could read up on?
Cheers

Re: Cash aspect of sperm donors?
In Australia sperm, like all other body products including organs and blood, cannot legally be bought or sold.
Most clinics that provide sperm donation services require the person receiving the sperm to cover associated medical costs such as sexual health testing but the donating man is not compensated. This, along with laws that grant children of sperm donation the rights to identifying information about their sperm donors once they turn 18, have led to a shortage of sperm in Australia.
Many clinics will ask if the woman or couple know anyone who would be willing to donate for them due to the potential wait for sperm to become available. Some clinics have taken to importing (medically healthy sperm) from overseas.
Some people, when faced with having to find their own donor, choose to procede without the assistance of a clinic. Obviously, this is a personal choice but it does create a larger legal grey area concerning the rights of the donor.
Any legitimate IVF clinic should be able to give you detailed information about the process and legal considerations regarding sperm donation. Your GP may also be able to provide some assistance.
You asked what the man gets out of donating - put simply, the joy and satisfaction of knowing he helped bring a life into the world. There is no legal entitlement to payment and any unofficial agreements should be very carefully considered.
I hope that helped.
