Re: Wong backs antigay marriage stance
Penny Wong is a member of the Labor party and they need to show they follow Labor's views.
Senator Wong said she respected Labor’s view of marriage as an institution between a man and a woman.
‘‘I am part of a party and I support the party’s policies.’’
For me personally, studying law and the history of marriage and its detriment to women. I don't want to be a part of that history.
Equal rights is much different as I believe any couple whether hetro, bi or homosexual needs to happen.
Teachers in private schools can still be legally fired due to their sexuality, that sort of discrimination needs to STOP.

Re: Wong backs antigay marriage stance
This is disappointing...No pollie has to back ALL the party policies.
We all know the history of marriage and its oppression of women but that has nothing to do with gay marriage rights.
Equal rights is what its about!

Re: Wong backs antigay marriage stance
I don't think we all know about the history of marriage and the oppression of women, I certainly didn't. I suspect many do not know when rape within marriage became a crime?
People who know about how political parties work would know why Penny cannot have a different public view.

Re: Wong backs antigay marriage stance
If the womyn wants to stay on the front bench she has to follow the Party line in public this is politics. She doesn't run the show so why would anyone think she is going to change the straight world on her own. Reality check here.
I don't know what Penny thinks privately about the heterosexual institution of marriage.

Re: Wong backs antigay marriage stance
State Education Minister Bronwyn Pike has also long supported gay marriage. Labor's candidate for the federal inner-city seat of Melbourne, Cath Bowtell, has also repudiated the party line, declaring her support for gay marriage. http://www.samesame.com.au/forum/showthread.php?p=276029
Does this mean Bowtell will have to toe the party line if elected? As the longest serving female minister in Victoria's history Bronwyn Pike has held many portfolios. She does not always agree with her party on all policies. It does not seem to be an issue for these women.

Bowtell is not on the front bench Wong is. Time will tell what Bowtell will or will not do.

Re: Wong backs antigay marriage stance
You are right Bowtell is not elected and I was wondering if she will toe the line if she is elected. Pike on the other hand, although she is State government, has had no trouble in going against party policy.

Re: Wong backs antigay marriage stance
I am all for getting rid of two party politics. But then Wong would still be wong. No poli will go with an issue that could cost them the election. Its all about power and money. Stuff the voters.

Re: Wong backs antigay marriage stance
hey maybe Julia is lying and when she gets elected as PM she will change her mind on same sex marriage and 'move forward' with Canada, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Iceland, South Africa, Mexico, at least 10 states in the United States and Argentina...where same sex marriage is legal.

If there is ever a Poli that is really living up to the letter of what politics means, we better preserve it in mummy wrap.

Re: Wong backs antigay marriage stance
i understand what you mean by statement but my take was making a statement would be to go against the policies of the Labor party and by doing so she would deliver a 'statement'...of course i base this on my own hope that Wong actually does not agree with the current Labor policy on same sex marriage and that may not be her true feelings...perhaps she is against same sex marriage...
