And that's the "good news"! My nephew comes out...
Hi there,
I just thought I would share with you something that has happened recently in my family, as (hopefully) a sign that the times are a changin'
My nephew, who recently turned 18, announced to his parents 2 years ago that he was gay. I think we had all suspected for a while but my brother formally shared this with us as a family last week. It was inevitable, given that for his 18th birthday celebrations he drank cocktails with his four best galpals and then they went to see Sex and the City!
While we are a pretty accepting family to come out to, (myself and another brother being gay) and my nephew's uncle on the other side of the family also being gay, what has made me happiest is that he is fully out among all his peers, including schoolmates at the Catholic College he attends.
His straight mates rib him occasionally but in a good-natured way and he has not been subject to any taunting or harassment. He hasn't lost any of his straight male mates at a time when this sort of disclosure may be quite confronting.
I know this isn't everyone's experience and as a family we are better prepared than most and he has obviously gained confidence from this, but it gladdens me to know that so far his coming out has been without incidence. Let's hope that society continues to be more accepting into the future.
Cheers, Jo
